I am so, so happy it’s baking season again.
-Date Spice Cookies-
(Ramona Blouin’s recipe. The result should be a chewy, crackly cookie, much flatter than mine pictured here, but I discovered today that my measuring spoons are not accurate; I put in nearly double the baking soda. Boo.)
Cream 3/4 cup butter, softened, and 1 cup sugar. Mix in 1 egg. Mix in 1/4 cup dark molasses. Sift in 2 cups flour, and 1 teaspoon each baking soda, cinnamon, ground cloves, ground ginger. Mix well. Stir in 1 cup chopped dates. Refrigerate 1 hour or overnight. Roll dough into 1” balls, roll in sugar, bake 2” apart at 350 for 15-18 minutes (underbake for chewiness). Enjoy the taste of autumn.  (Yield: 2 1/2 to 3 doz.)
